Last year on my Birthday my
Mother in Law gifted me an earrings and necklace set of Amethyst. Since then I have been remembering this
crystal, I somehow like the name of this crystal 'Amethyst' - doesn't it sound
very mysterious? To me it sounds like a name of some saint or healer who is of
course a 'living thing' someone from outer space - ‘Amethyst’! So I decided to
look up more and present to my readers a quick excerpt of my findings and my
personal perspective on this crystal.
Amethyst is very well known -- as from the ancients -- as a
sobriety stone. The word 'Amethyst' in Greek means 'Not Drunken'. It has been
used for millennia to prevent drunkenness, and is used to assist in getting rid
of addictions to alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc, and destructive compulsive
behaviors of all kinds. Amethyst is mined in Canada (Northwestern Ontario)
Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia and Argentina, as well as in Zambia, Namibia and other
African countries.
The Story
behind the origin of Amethyst:
The legend of the origin of
Amethyst comes from the Greeks. Dionysus, the God of intoxication was angered
one day by an insult from a mortal and swore revenge on the next mortal he
encountered. After creating tigers to carry out his wish, unsuspecting
Amethyst, a beautiful young maiden on her way to pay tribute to the GoddessDiana appeared. But in order to protect Amethyst from Dionysus's tigers,
Goddess Diana turned her into a stature of pure crystalline quartz. At the
sight of the beautiful statue of Amethyst, Dionysus is said to have wept tears
of wine, staining the quartz purple and creating the gem amethyst.
Healing
Power of Amethyst (Earlier era & Middle age):
Ø
The early Greeks believed that amethyst would protect one from the
effects of drunkenness when consuming alcohol. A possible explanation for this
unusual virtue being given to amethyst is that when water is poured into a cup
fashioned of amethyst, it would have the appearance of wine yet could be drunk
without experiencing wine's normal inebriated effect.
Ø
Leonardo Da Vinci wrote that amethyst was able to dissipate evil
thoughts and quicken the intelligence.
Ø
Because amethyst was thought to encourage celibacy and symbolize
piety, Amethyst was very important in the ornamentation of Catholic and
other churches in the middle Ages. It was, in particular, considered to
be the stone of bishops and they still often wear amethyst rings.
Ø
In Tibet, Amethyst is considered to be sacred to Buddha and
rosaries are often fashioned from it.
Ø
Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against
drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it! The
gemstone still symbolizes sobriety.
Ø
In ancient cultures, amethyst amulets were worn as antidotes
against poison, to dispel sleep, as protection against harm in battle and to
sharpen one's wits.
Healing
Power of Amethyst (Modern World):
Ø Emotionally,
amethyst is used in crystal healing to help heal personal losses and grief,
bringing one gently past. Amethyst has a gently sedative energy that can
promote peacefulness, happiness, and contentment. It also is said to bring
emotional stability and inner strength. This stability and strength not only
helps one hold firm in one's life, but it can enhance flexibility and
cooperation. To be flexible at need is a sure sign of strength.
Ø
Physically amethyst is said by spiritual healers and mystical lore
to heal the withdrawal symptoms of any sort of addiction, help with headaches,
insomnia, arthritis, diabetes, pain relief, circulatory system issues, endocrine
system problems, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, immune system deficiencies,
asthma, phobias, pregnancy and preventing miscarriage, menopause, PMS, and
general healing.
I am in love with Amethyst
